The first official Beatles single with EMI PARLOPHONE is a very
simple three chord song with rather bare lyrics and purposely
repetitive (I'd say almost jokingly repetitive), but it is also
something "different", with a very precise and contagious rhytm
, far from the bland and stale Mitch Murray's HOW DO YOU DO IT,
which was intended as a first single for them. There was no need
to insist on George Martin to give it a chance and although it
only made #17 in the U.K., in spite of Brian Epstein supposedly
ordering 10.000 copies for his NEMS shop in Liverpool to boost
the record on the charts, curiosity stung and he took a liking
for them because he saw that they showed an unmistakeable value
as composers.
We can hear the first version of the single, with Ringo playing
drums, on THE BEATLES PAST MASTERS ONE, although the mix is much
more obscure. Ringo's bass drum was sunk because it didn't match
the bass and Paul's vocal part is much less confident (he sounds
like a bundle of nerves). But this version from PLEASE PLEASE ME
album (the one tabbed here) sounds much better. Andy White sat
in on drums and Ringo played tambourine (Don't you think he beat
it too hard?. Sure It must have been a hell of a time for him,
although he gained due recognition finishing the album. Else,
White would only contribute to P.S. I LOVE YOU and an unreleased
version of PLEASE PLEASE ME). In this mix, guitars and harmonica
come to light and Paul sings much better. John and George play
both rhytm on their Gibson J—160's and they match it almost to
perfection in a very studied way (they had five days to rehearse
the song from the first try on June, 6th).
