Verse 1:

[Notes: 1) I believe that the guitar is capoed at the third fret,
in which case the chord progression transposes to the stock folkie
riff Am—Am/G—D9/F#—Fmaj7—E. This is further confirmed by the
voicings of the F and Bb chords in the chorus, which sound like
	 root—position D and G capoed up. 2) The electric piano plays a
variation of the second part of the instrumental break (q.v.) on
the first four lines of the verse.]

	Cm Cm/Bb
Hot town, summer in the city
	F9/A [x03543] Abmaj7 G
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
	Cm Cm/Bb
Been down, isn't it a pity
	F9/A Abmaj7 G
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

	 G G7/B
All around, people looking half dead
	 Cm C
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

Chorus (w/autoharp):

	F Bb
But at night it's a different world
	F Bb
Go out and find a girl
	F Bb
Come—on come—on and dance all night
	F Bb
Despite the heat it'll be alright

	    Dm G
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
		 Dm G
That the days can't be like the nights
	       Dm G
In the summer, in the city
	       Dm G
In the summer, in the city

Verse 2:

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

[repeat chorus]

	 Cm Ab7
